Following a complete design overhaul, Singita Sweni Lodge is arguably Africa’s most stylish safari lodge. Interior experts Cécile & Boyd took a “more is more” approach to the contemporary look — not a single lampshade or salt shaker is without a fascinating detail. Furniture in gold and bronze echoes the earthy surroundings, while pops of pink, citron, teal and blue draw inspiration from beetle shells, bird plumage and butterfly wings. Location

Singita Sweni Lodge is a modern bush hotel overlooking the Sweni River in the private Singita Lebombo Concession in the wildlife-rich North Kruger region of South Africa. The lodge is situated near the Mozambican border, 45 minutes from the Sitara Airstrip and 150 km from Hoedspruit. Set on the wooded bank of the Sweni River, it affords close-up views of impala, crocodiles, hippos and monkeys from the communal areas or your own deck.

The products used are carefully selected to create a positive impact on both guests and the environment. Dermalogica facial products use only the finest ingredients from eco-friendly sources and are not tested on animals. The Terres d’Afrique products, used for all body treatments, are a sustainably developed organic skincare range harnessing the power of Africa’s legendary botanical heritage. Singita Sweni Restaurant

For a remote bush lodge, this is Michelin quality. Singita enlists South African chef Liam Tomlin to revamp its menus, and what a transformation it is: a lunchtime seafood soup, seemingly classic, arrives with a fried whole soft-shell crab. Exquisite dinners feature game dishes and sea bass with smoked mussels and lemon-pressed potatoes, while the most life-affirming breakfast omelette comes with a view of impala grazing just a metre from your table. The intimate, integrated bar houses a deli fridge for self-service. Down in the cellar, entertaining and informative blind South African wine tastings take place. A special sundowner on a hilltop with local artisanal gins and canapés is a true highlight.

Exciting yet fabulous. Each of the seven glass-fronted suites boasts a “loose” roof of thinly sliced eucalyptus, patterned fabrics, African art objects and all the texture and vibrant colour arrangements you can imagine. Every deck overlooking the river features an outdoor shower and a net bed prepared for stargazing. The open interior includes two bathrooms, a sunken bathtub and a snug, temperature-controlled bed. With ample Wi-Fi, a generous minibar, a Bose sound system, a Nespresso machine and other amenities, you will truly want for nothing.

Each of the lodge’s modern en-suite rooms has been designed so that the open living area with panoramic viewing platforms maximises the sense of freedom. All suites feature outdoor showers overlooking the river and daybeds in the open, where you can spend the night under the stars.
