General Information
Visa
EU citizens do not require a visa for entry into Croatia.
For stays exceeding 90 days, it is necessary to register with the relevant police station no later than 8 days after arrival. This is followed by the issuance of a residence permit, which authorises a stay in the country for a maximum of 5 years.
Entry
A valid passport or a valid German identity card is required for entry. Children require a valid children’s passport. (A provisional passport or identity card is also sufficient for entry.)
All documents must be valid for the duration of the stay.
(Note: If you have reported your passport/identity card as stolen and subsequently recovered it, in rare cases the Croatian border police may confiscate the documents in question.)
As Croatia is currently not a member of the Schengen Agreement (as of spring 2020), border controls take place at the border with Slovenia for both entry and exit, where systematic checks of documents may occasionally cause significant delays.
The import and export of goods is subject to European Union regulations. Random checks may occur at the borders, during which both vehicles and persons are thoroughly inspected.
Currency
The official currency in Croatia is the Kuna (HRK).
Increasingly, prices in shops and restaurants are also quoted in euros.
Payment with common credit cards such as Mastercard or Visa is possible without problems in most shops and hotels.
Vaccinations
No mandatory vaccinations are required for entry.
Vaccination against Hepatitis A is recommended, and for longer stays, additional vaccinations against Hepatitis B, rabies and TBE (tick-borne encephalitis) are also advised.
During the summer months between May and August, there is a risk of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) transmission in the north of the country. Exposure prophylaxis against tick bites is also recommended.
Healthcare
Croatian healthcare can generally be considered very good, although it may not meet German standards outside the major cities.
In individual cases, immediate payment of treatment costs may be required. It is advisable to have a detailed invoice issued for submission to your German health insurer.
Taking out private travel health insurance is recommended, as any repatriation required may not be covered by statutory health insurance.

Location & Climate
Croatia is situated on the eastern Adriatic coast, in the transition zone between Central and South-Eastern Europe.
To the north, the country borders Slovenia and Hungary, and to the west and south-west it borders Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro.
The north-east of the country lies in the Pannonian Plain, characterised by flat terrain interspersed with some low mountain ranges. Summers in this region are hot and dry, while winters can be very cold. The spring and autumn months are excellent for city breaks to Zagreb or for round trips.
The western interior is traversed by the Dinaric Alps, which are ideal for hiking and enjoying Croatian nature.
The coastal regions have a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters. Swimming in the Adriatic is possible as early as May, and with an average water temperature of 24°C in the summer months of July and August, conditions are perfectly pleasant. The winter months, with average daytime temperatures of around 15°C, are very mild but can be quite rainy at times.
Plitvice Lakes National Park
Nature lovers will be in their element in this unique lake landscape. The area around the many lakes was declared Croatia’s first national park in 1948 and has since delighted countless visitors who flock to the park every year. Winding hiking trails and leisurely boat tours invite you to explore the picturesque nature and offer the opportunity to discover the beautiful panorama at your own pace. Small wooden boardwalks and paths lead you right up to the small waterfalls and crystal-clear streams of the lakes, opening up unique photo opportunities.
Dubrovnik
Perhaps the most famous city in Croatia has preserved its medieval charm. The narrow lanes of the old town invite leisurely strolling, and small shops offer delicious treats and souvenirs at every corner. A walk along Dubrovnik’s historic city walls and a climb to the prominent Bokar Fortress tower are especially rewarding. From there, you can enjoy an unparalleled view of the old town with its terracotta roofs and walls. The historically rich port city was a major trading centre of the Mediterranean, and the wealth the city accumulated created one of the most impressive cities of its era.
Amphitheatre of Pula
This historic relic from Roman times defines the Croatian city of Pula like hardly any other building. With its oval footprint of 132m x 105m, the amphitheatre is the sixth largest in the world and an impressive showcase of Roman high culture. Explore the vast complex where gladiatorial contests and naval battles for the entertainment of the masses took place as early as 2 BC.
Today, the amphitheatre is a venue for many events and festivals. Concerts, dance evenings and re-enacted gladiatorial fights take place in and around the arena almost daily. A particular highlight is the annual Pula Film Festival, which attracts countless visitors every summer.
