Location & Climate
Geographically, Cyprus is classified as part of Asia. It is situated in the eastern Mediterranean, surrounded by Greece, Turkey, Syria, and Lebanon. The island is traversed by two mountain ranges that encircle the Mesaoria, the fertile heartland and principal agricultural region of this densely forested island. In the northeast, the rugged Kyrenia Mountains extend with steep cliffs down to the sea.
In the south-western interior lies the lush, volcanic Troodos Mountains with Mount Olympus, which at nearly 2,000 metres is the highest peak on the island. Here, coniferous trees, fruit trees, and grapevines flourish.
Cypresses and olive trees further define the island’s landscape. The coastline consists of sandy and pebble beaches, interspersed with steep gorges and secluded bathing coves. In spring, the island transforms into a colourful carpet of blossoms, where orchids can also be found.
The climate in Cyprus is subtropical Mediterranean. Summers on the island are exceptionally long, and temperatures can exceed 45 degrees Celsius inland during days with up to 13 hours of sunshine. Along the coasts, temperatures remain comparatively milder at up to 37 degrees, tempered by sea breezes.
The sea maintains pleasant bathing temperatures of up to 20 degrees Celsius from April to November. Towards the end of November, it cools down, and winter temperatures can drop to as low as 8 degrees Celsius, while snowfall on the mountain peaks is not uncommon in winter. April, May, October, and November are recommended as the ideal travel months, as the climate is most pleasant during these periods.
Salt Lakes of Larnaca
One of the island’s first highlights is a natural phenomenon that one would hardly expect on this paradisiacal island. Just four kilometres from Larnaca Airport lies Cyprus’s second-largest salt lake. This extraordinary biotope is, in winter — when the lake swells and water levels rise significantly — a paradise for thousands of flamingos and numerous other migratory birds that overwinter here. In the hot summer months, the lake dries out completely, leaving behind a dry lake bed with a thick salt crust. A truly surreal sight that lends the entire surroundings a completely different character.
Paphos Archaeological Park
Paphos was an ancient settlement of the Ptolemaic Kingdom, founded around the 4th century BC. In the archaeological park in the eponymous city of Paphos, visitors can admire the various ruins and artefacts discovered at this significant excavation site. The majority of the finds date primarily from the Roman era, during which the city grew into a prominent location on Cyprus. The archaeological park guides visitors through the various discoveries and features, as particular highlights, four remarkably well-preserved villas whose ornate mosaic floors represent a considerable cultural heritage.
Karpas Peninsula
A visit to the Karpas Peninsula rarely features on the itinerary of a Cyprus holiday. Yet the far northeastern tip of the island is an unexpected paradise. Nowhere else in Cyprus can you enjoy such magnificent sunsets on deserted dream beaches. Here you will also find untouched forests, lush flower meadows, and a fascinating array of wildlife. Hiking tours on the Karpas Peninsula lead through natural paradises that have become increasingly rare in the Mediterranean. The small, sleepy villages also exude a charm found nowhere else on Cyprus. Their architectural distinctiveness and impressive structures bear witness to the eventful history of the region and the entire island.
The birthplace of Aphrodite, with nearly nine months of bathing season, diverse natural beauty, and millennia of European, Asian, and African-influenced cultural history, is a fascinating travel destination.
Historical, religious, and cultural sites, secluded mountain villages, numerous museums, and picturesque viewpoints offer holidaymakers with the most diverse interests comprehensive entertainment. Both on water and on land, the leisure activities are so extensive and varied that every guest will find something to suit their tastes.
