Location & Climate
Finland is located in Northern Europe and borders Sweden, Norway and Russia. To the south and west, the country is surrounded by the Baltic Sea. The landscape is characterised by extensive forests and lake landscapes, while the north (Lapland) has a more arctic character.
The climate is overall cool-temperate to subarctic:
South (e.g. Helsinki, Turku): mild to cool summers, cold winters, changeable weather.
Lake District & Inland: more pronounced seasons, frequently snowy in winter.
Lapland: long, very cold winters with stable snow cover; pleasantly cool summers with long days.
Finland’s capital combines Nordic design, modern architecture and a maritime atmosphere. Highlights include the vibrant market culture, museums and the proximity to the archipelago, which is ideal for day trips.
The historic fortress island off Helsinki (UNESCO) offers an impressive insight into Finland’s history. It is accessible by ferry and is excellently suited for a half-day excursion.
Rovaniemi is considered the gateway to Lapland and is an ideal starting point for winter experiences such as Northern Lights viewing, snow safaris and nature excursions. The region also features exclusive lodges and unique accommodation.
(Highlights) Reasons to Travel
Finland is perfect for travellers who value nature, privacy and quality. In winter, the focus is on experiences such as Northern Lights, husky tours, reindeer safaris and snow-covered landscapes. In summer, the country delights with lakes, national parks, long days and a very relaxed way of travelling.
Another highlight is the Finnish sauna culture, which is frequently combined with extraordinary natural settings, as well as the culinary scene, which is strongly seasonal and places regional produce at its centre.
