Further Risks
Dengue Fever
In Spain there is a risk of contracting dengue fever, which is transmitted by the day-active Aedes mosquito.
General exposure prophylaxis is advised.
Exposure prophylaxis:
-Wear body-covering, light-coloured clothing
-Use insect repellent on all exposed skin areas
Safety
Due to the dry Mediterranean climate, large-scale forest and bush fires can occur particularly inland and on Spain’s island groups during summer.
This may result in restrictions to infrastructure and tourism in the affected regions.
Parts of the Spanish mainland as well as the Canary Islands are located in seismically active zones, which means occasional minor and major earthquakes can occur.
Crime
In major cities and at busy tourist destinations, petty crime such as pickpocketing and confidence tricks occurs more frequently.
However, the risk can be minimised by following these general behavioural guidelines:
-Do not carry valuables openly on your person.
-Keep money, documents and valuables secure.
-Be particularly attentive in large crowds (airports, markets, etc.).
-Lock car doors while driving.
Terrorism
Since the attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils in August 2017, Spain has been at the second-highest terrorism alert level. Additional security measures have been implemented at busy locations and important public institutions.

Location & Climate
Spain lies in south-western Europe and, together with Portugal, forms the Iberian Peninsula.
To the north-east, the country borders France; to the south-west, Portugal. To the west and north, the peninsula borders the Atlantic, and to the south and east, the Mediterranean, where the Balearic Islands are also located.
The country’s large extent and geographical proximity to Africa mean that Spain can be divided into 4 climate zones.
In the mountain ranges of the north, typical mountain climate prevails. Here, winters are usually long and cold with sometimes heavy snowfall, while summers are relatively short and cool.
The climate in the rest of northern Spain is influenced by low-pressure systems that move from the Atlantic into Spain. These bring mild summers and winters that can, however, be quite humid at times.
The central Spanish highlands, on the other hand, have a continental climate, meaning summers are usually dry and warm to hot. The majority of annual rainfall occurs in winter, with temperatures usually around or above freezing.
In the regions of southern Spain and along the Mediterranean coast as well as on the Balearic Islands, Mediterranean climate dominates. Here, winters are short and mild. Summers, by contrast, are long and warm to hot. Rainfall is mostly confined to the autumn months.
La Sagrada Familia
The incomparable cathedral in the centre of Barcelona impresses with its unique design. The famous Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi created his masterpiece with the design of this sacred building. This church has been under construction for over 100 years and is now set to be finally completed for the 100th anniversary of Gaudi’s death in 2026. Particularly striking are the cathedral’s towers, which stand out with their distinctive design. All around, visitors also find loving details and small secrets worked into the building’s facade. The unique design continues in the interior of the church. Light and dark accents play together perfectly, and an unprecedented ceiling design crowns Gaudi’s creation as perhaps the most beautiful cathedral in the world.
Alhambra
The Alhambra is a citadel in Andalusia and is Spain’s most visited tourist attraction. The Moorish fortress complex sits on a hill that commands wide views across the region. Combined with the Generalife summer palace, it creates a unique attraction full of fascinating details and lovingly crafted ornamentation. Within the fortress complex, you will find lushly blooming gardens and richly decorated masonry, preserved like in no other fortress complex in Europe. A visit to the Alhambra transports you back to the golden age of Moorish culture and gives an unspoilt impression of the life of the emirs and the court that, from here, guided one of the most advanced civilisations of its time.
Teide National Park
The Teide National Park extends along the slopes of the mountain of the same name on the Canary Island of Tenerife. The park is the oldest national park on the Canaries and offers a great diversity of landscapes, making it a perfect destination for extensive hiking tours. From alien-looking stone deserts to dense forests, many fascinating panoramas can be found in the park’s various regions. The proximity to popular holiday resorts on Tenerife and the good infrastructure also make the park a suitable destination for a day trip. A particular highlight is the Altavista refuge, situated at an altitude of 3,270 metres. An overnight stay here guarantees an unforgettable sunrise.
Spain entices with many different attractions for extensive exploration of the country.
The country’s eventful history shapes the culture to this day, and particularly in the southern regions, a wealth of traces of the Moorish rule over the Iberian Peninsula can still be found. Other regions delight with lesser-known regional traditions, making a journey through the country’s large and small towns always an adventure.
The landscape also offers a breathtaking variety and provides every holidaymaker with ideal conditions for a perfect holiday. Those seeking a relaxing beach holiday will find countless dream beaches and pleasantly warm water temperatures along the expansive Mediterranean coast.
Active holidaymakers also find a wide selection of activities of every kind throughout the country.
The Atlantic coast and the Canaries offer ideal waves for surfers of every experience level. The foothills of the Pyrenees and the central highlands are perfect hiking destinations, offering numerous trails and picturesque landscapes.
Divers can pursue their passion on the Balearic Islands and explore a wonderful underwater world.
Spain also boasts a vibrant nightlife. Party hotspots such as Ibiza and Barcelona in particular impress with exclusive and breathtaking entertainment. Unique and legendary venues such as Lio in the harbour of Ibiza Town offer unforgettable experiences.
Culturally and scenically, Greece is simply incredibly moving. Athens alone could be declared its own country, as the most populous city in Greece simply has so much to offer that you could holiday there again and again without ever being able to say you had seen everything.
