General Information

Visa

German citizens require a valid visa to enter the Maldives.

For tourist stays of less than 30 days, a tourist visa is issued upon arrival. This visa can be extended up to 90 days by written application. The application must be submitted and approved on site. A stay of more than 30 days cannot be guaranteed prior to departure.

Entry Requirements

German citizens require a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry. A provisional passport is sufficient for entry.

A German national identity card does not entitle the holder to enter the Maldives.

Minors are not subject to any special regulations.

Prescription medications are subject to strict import controls. Upon import, a medical certificate in English is required, documenting the name of the medication, the patient and the daily dosage.

Further information on the import regulations of the Maldives can be found here.

Currency

The official currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR). It is recommended to carry cash in US dollars, as ATMs are often unavailable, particularly on smaller islands.
Most major international credit cards are accepted by the majority of resorts.

Health Advice

Medical care in the Maldives may be limited in some areas. Various resorts have their own doctor on site; however, technical equipment for treating more serious conditions is often lacking. In cases of acute illness, evacuation to Sri Lanka or India is usually necessary to ensure appropriate treatment.
It is advisable to take out international health insurance and repatriation cover.

Vaccinations

No mandatory vaccinations are required for direct entry from Germany.

When entering from a yellow fever area, all travellers must provide proof of yellow fever vaccination.

Hepatitis A is recommended as a travel vaccination, as well as Hepatitis B and Typhoid for longer stays.

Further Risks

Nationwide, particularly immediately after the rainy season, there is an increased risk of disease transmission by the daytime-active Aedes mosquito. This mosquito species can transmit diseases such as Dengue fever, Zika virus or Chikungunya fever.
Exposure prophylaxis is recommended.

Exposure prophylaxis:
-Wear body-covering, light-coloured clothing
-Apply insect repellent to all exposed skin areas

The equatorial location of the individual islands results in particularly intense sun exposure around midday. Ensure adequate fluid intake, use appropriate sun protection and avoid prolonged direct sun exposure around midday where possible.

Safety

Crime

In the capital Male, petty crime such as pickpocketing may occasionally occur. The resort islands are not affected by this.

Important Notes

During the fasting month of Ramadan, eating, drinking, smoking or chewing gum in public spaces or vehicles is prohibited under penalty of law, including for non-Muslims.

The possession of even small amounts of narcotics is strictly prohibited. Tourists have also been sentenced to life imprisonment for violations.

LGBTIQ

Homosexuality is a criminal offence in the Maldives and can also lead to criminal prosecution for tourists.

Location & Climate

The Maldives are an island nation southwest of India, located in the Indian Ocean. The nearly 1,200 islands stretch over almost 900 kilometres from north to south. The islands and atolls are surrounded by numerous reefs, which protect the islands from storms and ensure gentle waves on the beaches.

The climate in the Maldives is consistently warm and tropical with high humidity. Temperatures reach around 30°C during the day throughout the year, while they rarely drop below 25°C at night.

From December to approximately April, the drier northeast monsoon prevails in the Maldives, while from May to November the wetter southwest monsoon determines the weather. Due to the expanse of the Maldivian islands, local weather conditions may vary.

The months of September and October are considered the wettest, with an average of about 15 rainy days. In February, the driest month, it rains on average 3 days. However, rain showers in the Maldives are usually brief and the sun quickly reappears. It rarely rains continuously for an entire day or several consecutive days.

On most islands, even on days with rain showers, you can enjoy approximately 6 to 8 hours of sunshine. Divers may be more affected by the sometimes heavy showers and strong winds, as the seabed is stirred up and visibility while diving may be reduced even in the hours following the rain showers.

Luxury Trip to the Maldives: Sights & Experiences

Diving with Whale Sharks

The underwater world of the Maldives is spectacular and teeming with life. During your diving excursions, you will constantly be accompanied by colourful schools of fish and majestic sea turtles.

However, the chance for a truly extraordinary encounter presents itself only during certain months of the year. There is hardly anything more thrilling than diving with sharks. Usually, you sit safely in a cage or the sharks are barely larger than yourself.

In the Maldives, however, you can dive with whale sharks — the largest sharks in the world. Gliding alongside these gentle giants through the coral reefs and crystal-clear waters is an unforgettable experience.

Romantic Beach Dinner

The Maldives are the perfect destination for a romantic couples’ getaway, honeymoon or dream wedding.

Nothing rounds off the perfect day together quite as beautifully as a romantic dinner on a pristine white beach with the most stunning sunset in the world.

Begin your shared journey with your feet in the fine sand of the Maldivian dream islands while enjoying a multi-course meal of the highest calibre.

Incredible locations also offer spectacular experiences for further dinners. Spend the evening surrounded by a sea of candles and torches, in a tropical paradise framed by palm trees, or on a shallow sandbank with your feet in the warm Indian Ocean.

Submarine Tours through Coral Reefs

The underwater world of the Maldives is rich in species and full of wondrous things waiting to be discovered.

Not everyone can or wants to dive or swim alongside sharks and rays. Yet, the underwater world of the Maldives can also be explored effortlessly and from the comfort of a reclining seat.

Various hotels offer submarine tours through the house reef and the fascinating rock formations in the different atolls.

The selection of submarines ranges from small vessels with a capacity of approximately 10 passengers to larger submarines for up to 50 passengers. Inside, you can enjoy a cool drink, recline in the cushioned seat and admire the colourful marine life through the large portholes.

Luxury Holiday Maldives: Reasons to Visit

The Maldives are the ideal holiday destination for anyone seeking relaxation and respite from the stresses of everyday life. The flight time to this island paradise is comparatively short at around 10 hours, and thanks to a wide range of flight connections, the Maldives can often be reached by direct flight.

The approach to the respective resort island is an absolute highlight in itself, as the individual islands emerge from the azure sea like sparkling emeralds.

The transfer by seaplane or speedboat to the resort is supremely comfortable, and so your holiday begins the moment you land on the main island.

Every Maldivian island offers incomparably fine sand on its endless beaches and lush vegetation that is home to many exotic creatures. There is always something new to discover on each island, and even a quiet evening stroll is a special experience time and again. The crowning glory of every evening on the beach are the incredible sunsets that bathe the entire sea in a warm orange glow.

The underwater world of the Maldives ranks among the most extraordinary in the world. The coral reefs surrounding the islands offer both beginners and experienced divers outstanding opportunities to marvel at schools of fish, rays and even sharks. A particularly memorable experience for any diver is a dive with the gentle giants of the Maldives — the whale sharks.
