Location & Climate

The island state of Mauritius is located in the southern part of the Indian Ocean and, together with the islands of Reunion and Rodrigues, belongs to the Mascarene Islands.

The island lies in the summer-wet tropical zone and therefore has more rainy days during the summer months from December to April than in the relatively dry winter months from June to October. Due to its tropical location, temperatures in Mauritius are very consistent, averaging around 30°C in summer and rarely falling below 20°C in winter.

In the interior of the island, several mountain ranges rise to heights of up to 800 metres, shielding the western side from both strong winds and heavy rain clouds, while the east coast is directly exposed to the Southeast Trade Winds.

Stronger winds and sometimes heavy rain showers do occur here more frequently. However, the rain showers usually occur at night, still allowing for beautiful sunny days with pleasant climate conditions.

The tropical location results in high humidity of approximately 70% throughout the country. In the mountain regions and rainforests, this can reach up to 100%.

Water temperatures along the coast of Mauritius are pleasant year-round and perfect for swimming. In the winter months of August and September, the temperature is approximately 23°C, rising to up to 28°C in summer.

Luxury Travel Mauritius: Landmarks

Port Louis

The capital of the island state is the heart of the island and a melting pot of cultures. The city is a wonderful mix of cultural attractions, exquisite restaurants, and vibrant shopping streets.

The centre of Port Louis is defined by the diverse cultures that have influenced Mauritius over the centuries. A colourful blend of Indian, French, English, and many other cultures emerged, which still shapes the street scene today.

The Central Market in Port Louis is the best place to taste these influences on your palate. At the Aapravasi Ghat, visitors can experience first-hand how colonialism shaped this island and particularly Port Louis.

A visit to the capital may not be the first thing that comes to mind when planning a trip to Mauritius, but it should by no means be missed.

Black River Gorges National Park

The entire natural beauty of Mauritius can be admired in this national park. Picturesque valleys and lush green vegetation dominate the landscape.

The island’s largest national park is also home to an extraordinary variety of plants and wildlife. Over 300 plant species and 9 bird species found only on Mauritius can be discovered in the Black River Gorges National Park.

Approximately 60 kilometres of hiking trails offer excellent opportunities for exploration and for reaching the park’s highlights. In addition to the only remaining natural rainforest on Mauritius, the most notable attraction is the breathtaking Alexandra Falls waterfall. Many more trails lead to the park’s numerous points of interest and through its picturesque scenery, suitable for beginners and experienced hikers alike.
