Location & Climate

Austria is a country in Central Europe, bordering Germany and the Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia and Hungary to the east, Slovenia and Italy to the south, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west.

A large part of the national territory is shaped by the peaks and plateaus of the Alps. The climates in the Alpine region are varied. The high mountain ranges of the Alps often result in increased precipitation in southern valleys, while shielding other valleys from heavy rainfall, creating so-called “Foehn valleys” where a comparatively mild climate prevails. Winters in the Alpine regions are cold with average temperatures around 0°C, while summers remain relatively mild at approximately 22°C in July and August.

In the east of Austria, the landscape is characterised by the Vienna Basin and the Pannonian Plain. Here the climate is more continental with less precipitation. Summers are hot and winters cold. In January, the average daytime temperature drops to around 0°C. The summer months of July and August are the warmest months of the year, when temperatures of approximately 27°C are reached.
As the only region in Austria, the southern Styria is influenced by the Mediterranean climate. The climate is milder year-round than in the rest of the country. Temperatures rarely drop below 0°C in winter, and in the summer months temperatures above 30°C are often reached.

Luxury Holiday Austria: Sights & Attractions

Schoenbrunn Palace

The grand palace of the Habsburg monarchy is a green oasis on the outskirts of Vienna. In its present form, it has served as the Habsburg emperors’ seat of government since the 18th century and was the centre of power in the Holy Roman Empire. The 1,441 rooms of the palace are richly decorated and for the most part still in their original condition. The decorations are largely in the Rococo style. However, almost every room has a personal touch and reflects the eventful history of the palace and of Austria as a whole. The extensive palace park adjoining the palace is an ideal place for a leisurely stroll in the greenery.

Golden Roof

The Golden Roof was built by Emperor Maximilian I and is today the landmark of Innsbruck. The ornate bay window is famous for its more than 2,500 gilded copper shingles that adorn the roof. From one of the cosy cafes on Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse, this showpiece of Habsburg architecture can be particularly well admired. The bay window is also adorned with a multitude of wood carvings and significant paintings. The house in which the Tyrolean sovereigns resided in the mid-15th century has since been converted into a museum and houses exhibits from the life of Maximilian I.

Tscheppa Gorge

The Tscheppa Gorge in Carinthia is one of the most beautiful places in Austria. An idyllic hiking trail leads through green forests and along rushing waters. The path through the gorge reveals stunning views and secluded spots of nature. The crystal-clear river is a constant companion and provides a refreshing cool-down on warm days. Along the trail, small huts and resting places invite you to pause for a snack and a rest. Deep within the gorge, the hiking trail leads across wooden walkways along steep cliffs. Those who complete the path to the end are rewarded with the sight of the cascading Tschauko Waterfall.

Luxury Trip to Austria: Reasons to Visit

With its diverse regions, Austria has a great many things to offer.

Tyrol and the Vorarlberg region offer world-class ski areas and winter sports. Renowned ski resorts such as Kitzbuehel and Ischgl provide an exciting winter wonderland with traditional Alpine hut charm and perfect piste conditions.

In the summer months, the entire Alpine region transforms into a perfect idyll for hikers and nature lovers. Numerous hiking trails allow you to explore Austria’s natural beauty, leading through sleepy valleys and picturesque mountain landscapes.
Austria’s charming towns stand out with their incomparable character. Cities like Innsbruck and Vienna are brimming with buildings from the Alpine republic’s eventful history.

Places such as Mirabell Palace and Hohensalzburg Fortress bear witness to the warlike times of centuries past and the transition to the heyday of Austrian classicism. A wide range of influences shape Austria’s cultural diversity, and world-famous artists like Beethoven and Mozart continue to make the places of their work hotspots of the classical arts to this day.

As diverse as the culture is Austria’s cuisine. The former dual monarchy united a wide variety of peoples in one state, all of whom shaped the national cuisine and created a unique melting pot.

Equally fascinating as the cities are the people of Austria. From the small, sleepy village in the countryside to the capital Vienna, there is a joie de vivre emanating from the inhabitants who savour life at a relaxed pace.
