Luxury Travel Dubai – General Travel Information

Visa

German nationals do not require a visa for entry into the UAE for tourist, business (without employment) or visit purposes for a maximum duration of 90 days within 180 days.
You are not permitted to work in the UAE, whether paid or unpaid. The authorities may extend the stay beyond 90 days.

If a non-tourist stay in the UAE is intended, current entry requirements should be enquired about in good time before departure from the UAE’s diplomatic missions in Germany.

Exceeding the permitted length of stay may result in significant fines depending on the duration of the illegal stay, as well as deportation. In cases of prolonged overstay, detention cannot be ruled out.

Entry

Entry and import regulations for German nationals may change at short notice without prior notification to the Federal Foreign Office. Legally binding information and/or information beyond these notices regarding entry and customs regulations for the import of goods can only be obtained directly from the representations of your destination country.
Customs regulations for Germany can be found on the website of German Customs and via the “Zoll und Reise” app, or by contacting them by telephone.

Travel Documents

Entry is possible for German nationals with the following documents:

  • Passport: Yes
  • Provisional passport: No
  • Identity card: No
  • Provisional identity card: No
  • Children’s passport: Yes*

Notes/Minimum validity:

Travel documents must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry for stays of up to 90 days. The UAE border authorities will not permit entry without a sufficiently valid passport.

In the past, the border authorities in Dubai have occasionally accepted a passport validity of three months. However, this does not correspond to the official requirements of the United Arab Emirates. There is a risk that affected passengers may be returned to their country of origin (departure point). Consular assistance in passport matters from the German missions in the UAE is only possible after entry, i.e. not within the international transit area.

*In the past, presentation of an extended children’s passport has led to rejection at the border or by the airline.

Entry with a provisional passport is no longer possible according to the UAE.

  • Apply for a regular biometric passport well in advance of your departure (express procedure if necessary)

Currency

The national currency is the Dirham (AED). Withdrawing cash from ATMs is usually possible without problems using credit cards and often also with bank cards. Payment by credit card is widespread.

Health Advice

Medical care can generally be described as good. German-speaking doctors are frequently available. Only in more rural regions may there still be limitations in care.

  • Take out international health and repatriation insurance for the duration of your stay abroad. Detailed information is available from the German Liaison Office for Health Insurance – International.
  • Before travelling, seek personal advice from tropical medicine advisory centres, tropical medicine specialists or travel medicine specialists, and have your vaccinations updated, even if you already have tropical experience from other regions. You can find suitable doctors, for example, via the DTG (German Society for Tropical Medicine).

Please note the continuously updated information on COVID-19 as well as the guidance in the COVID-19 information sheet, on the pages of the WHO, RKI and BZgA.

Vaccinations

No mandatory vaccinations are required for direct entry from Germany. For entry or transit of more than 12 hours from a yellow fever area, proof of yellow fever vaccination is required for all persons over nine months of age.

  • Ensure that you and your children are up to date with the standard vaccinations according to the vaccination calendar of the Robert Koch Institute.
  • Travel vaccinations against Hepatitis A are recommended; for long-term stays or particular exposure, vaccinations against Hepatitis B, rabies and meningococcal disease (ACWY) are also recommended.
  • Please note the usage instructions and aids for determining indications in the Travel Vaccination Recommendations information sheet.
  • Current, detailed travel vaccination recommendations for professionals are available from the DTG.

Further Risks

MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome)

This infectious disease has been causing sporadic severe respiratory illnesses since 2012, primarily in countries on the Arabian Peninsula. The cause is a coronavirus (MERS-CoV) whose biology has not been conclusively determined. Camels appear to be involved in transmission to humans. Human-to-human transmission has only occurred through very close contact with the sick; see the MERS Coronavirus information sheet.

  • To prevent infection, avoid unnecessary contact with camels.

Safety

Crime

The UAE is among the safest countries in the Middle East with an extremely low crime rate. Nevertheless, isolated incidents of pickpocketing, for example in large shopping centres or at major events, cannot be ruled out. There are occasional attacks on women and (female) young people travelling alone.

  • Keep money, identification documents, driving licence, flight tickets and other important documents secure.
  • Prefer cashless payments and only carry the cash needed for the day, leaving unnecessary valuables behind.
  • Be particularly vigilant in larger crowds such as at airports or on buses, and watch your valuables.
  • As a woman or young person travelling alone, exercise particular caution when using taxis or walking after dark.
  • Be sceptical of unusual emails, prize notifications, offers and requests for help from supposed acquaintances. Do not share personal data; instead, verify in person if necessary or contact the police.

Terrorism

The terrorist organisation IS has been threatening attacks since 2014 in countries allied with the USA. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is an active member of the anti-IS coalition.

  • Be particularly vigilant in busy places and on special occasions.
  • Please note the worldwide security advisory.

Special Behavioural Guidelines

Customs and laws are strongly influenced by Islam and its beliefs and values.

Women are not subject to any special restrictions or prohibitions. They are permitted to drive a motor vehicle as well as move freely in public, including without male accompaniment. However, restraint is advised regarding clothing. Sleeveless tops and very short skirts or trousers do not correspond to local values and may attract unwanted and unpleasant attention from others.

Ramadan

During the fasting month of Ramadan, restrictions in daily life and heightened sensitivity in religious matters and in questions of respecting Islamic traditions should be expected. Women in particular should wear modest, long-sleeved clothing during this time; men should avoid wearing short casual clothing.

LGBTIQ+

Criminal law is influenced by Islamic moral values. Homosexual relationships are prohibited. They are also subject to criminal prosecution if reported. Transgender persons should particularly note the prohibition of “cross-dressing”.

  • Please note the general guidance for LGBTIQ individuals.

Location and Climate

Dubai is the capital of the emirate of the same name and is considered the largest city in the United Arab Emirates on the Persian Gulf. The emirate is located on a peninsula and, with 2.2 million inhabitants, has the highest population of any emirate, ahead of Abu Dhabi. The emirate extends from the dominant city centre of Dubai into the interior between Abu Dhabi to the southwest and Sharjah to the northeast. The predominantly largest part of the country consists of desert.

As Dubai is classified as a classic desert area, summers are extremely hot, windy and dry. Maximum temperatures in the sunny months are around 40°C and around 30°C at night. Winter, on the other hand, is relatively short and pleasantly cool with temperatures between 10 and 21°C. It is advisable to visit Dubai during the winter months, particularly if you are sensitive to heat.

Luxury Travel to Dubai – Attractions

Burj Khalifa

The Burj Khalifa is indisputably one of the most spectacular attractions in Dubai. Since 2008, the skyscraper has been the tallest building in the world with the most floors. An impressive 828 metres tall! Just for comparison: Berlin’s Television Tower, at 368 metres, is not even half as high! From the Burj Khalifa you are guaranteed a unique and breathtaking view of Dubai and the surrounding desert. To avoid long queues, tickets can be purchased in advance.

Dubai Fountain

Every evening, spectacular water shows take place directly in front of the Dubai Mall – a definite must-see. Typical for the city of superlatives: the Dubai Fountain is located on the Burj Khalifa Lake and ranks as the largest fountain in the world. If you are already visiting the Burj Khalifa building, you can also admire the gigantic water fountain directly below the skyscraper. The lights and water show begins from 6:00 PM, restarting every half hour. Although you can watch the show during the day as well, the colourful water display in the evening with its many lights, accompanied by music, is certainly far more impressive and immersive.

Palm Jumeirah

Also known as the Palm Islands, the artificially constructed islands in the Arabian Gulf off the coast of Dubai are a true eye-catcher – especially from above. The islands are designed in the shape of palm fronds and are home to many hotels and resorts. Palm Jumeirah is sometimes even referred to as the eighth wonder of the world and can also be explored by boat. Alternatively, buses serve the island area with four stops in total. A definite must-see on any holiday in Dubai!

Luxury Holiday Dubai – Reasons to Visit / Highlights

Jumeirah Mosque

What would a trip to Dubai be without having visited at least one mosque up close? With its remarkable, oriental architecture, the Jumeirah Mosque ranks among the finest highlights that Dubai has to offer. Located north of the coast of Dubai Marina, the mosque with its light facade and elaborately decorated domes is also accessible to non-Muslims. It was built from 1976 in the style of the Egyptian and Syrian-influenced Fatimids. The mosque can be entered wearing traditional garments, i.e. veiled. Traditional clothing is also available for visitors at the entrance. The great thing: non-Muslims can also visit the Jumeirah Mosque under its motto “Open doors, open minds” to learn more about Islam and Arab culture.
