Visa
German nationals do not require a visa for entry into the UAE for tourism, business (without employment) or visit purposes for a maximum of 90 days within 180 days.
You are not permitted to work in the UAE, whether paid or unpaid. The authorities may extend the stay beyond 90 days.
If a non-tourist stay in the UAE is intended, the current entry requirements should be obtained in good time before departure from the UAE’s diplomatic representations in Germany.
Exceeding the permitted period of stay may result in significant fines and deportation, depending on the length of the illegal stay. In cases of prolonged overstay, imprisonment cannot be ruled out.
Entry Requirements
Entry and import regulations for German nationals may change at short notice without the Federal Foreign Office being informed in advance. Legally binding information and/or information beyond these notes regarding entry and customs regulations for the import of goods can only be obtained directly from the representations of your destination country.
Customs regulations for Germany can be found on the website of German Customs and via the “Zoll und Reise” app, or enquired about by telephone.
Travel Documents
Entry is possible for German nationals with the following documents:
Notes / Minimum validity:
Travel documents must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry for stays of up to 90 days. The UAE border authorities do not permit entry without a sufficiently valid passport.
In the past, border authorities in Dubai have occasionally accepted a passport validity of three months. However, this does not correspond to the official requirements of the United Arab Emirates. There is a risk that affected passengers may be sent back to their country of origin (departure point). Consular assistance in passport matters from German missions in the UAE is only possible after entry, i.e. not within the international transit area.
*In the past, extended children’s passports have led to rejections at the border or by the airline.
Entry with a provisional passport is no longer possible according to UAE authorities.
Currency
The local currency is the Dirham (AED). Withdrawing cash from ATMs is usually possible without issue using credit cards and often also bank cards. Payment by credit card is widely accepted.
Health Advice
Medical care is generally good. German-speaking doctors are frequently available. Only in more rural areas may there still be limitations in care.
Please note the continuously updated information on COVID-19 as well as the information in the COVID-19 factsheet, on the pages of the WHO, the RKI and the BZgA.
Vaccinations
No mandatory vaccinations are required for direct entry from Germany. For entry or transit of more than 12 hours from a yellow fever area, all persons older than nine months must provide proof of yellow fever vaccination.
Further Risks
MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome)
This infectious disease has been causing sporadic severe respiratory illnesses since 2012, primarily in countries of the Arabian Peninsula. It is caused by a coronavirus (MERS-CoV), the biology of which has not been fully clarified. Camels appear to be involved in transmission to humans. Human-to-human transmission has only occurred with very close contact with infected individuals, see the MERS coronavirus factsheet.
Safety
Crime
The UAE is one of the safest countries in the Middle East with an extremely low crime rate. Nevertheless, isolated incidents of pickpocketing, for example in large shopping centres or at major events, cannot be ruled out. There are occasional assaults on women and (female) young people travelling alone.
Terrorism
The terrorist organisation IS has been threatening attacks in countries allied with the USA since 2014. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is an active member of the anti-IS coalition.

Special Behavioural Guidelines
Customs and laws are strongly shaped by Islam and its beliefs and values.
Women are not subject to any particular restrictions or prohibitions. They are permitted to drive a motor vehicle and to move freely in public, including without male accompaniment. However, restraint is advised regarding clothing. Sleeveless tops and very short skirts or trousers do not conform to local values and may attract unwanted and unpleasant attention from others.
Ramadan
During the fasting month of Ramadan, restrictions in everyday life and increased sensitivity in religious matters as well as regarding respect for Islamic traditions should be expected. Women should wear particularly modest, long-sleeved clothing during this time, and men should avoid wearing casual shorts.
LGBTIQ+
Criminal law is shaped by Islamic moral values. Homosexual relationships are prohibited and, if reported, are subject to criminal prosecution. Transgender persons should particularly note the prohibition of “cross-dressing”.
Location and Climate
The Emirate of Abu Dhabi lies as an island of over 70 square kilometres in the Persian Gulf, more precisely in the mangrove belt. It is connected to the mainland by three bridges, and approximately 1.4 million people live in the city centre.
As one might expect, the climate in this desert zone is extremely hot and dry with little to no precipitation. The average annual temperature is 33.1°C. The highest values are reached between May and October, when daytime temperatures often climb above the 40°C mark. It is therefore recommended to visit Abu Dhabi outside the summer season if you already know that you do not tolerate extreme heat well.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
When holidaying in a strictly Muslim country, you should not miss one of the largest mosques in the world. With its many domes and various architectural styles, this religious site combines architectural inspirations from different eras and regions and is an absolute must-see in Abu Dhabi. You will certainly feel as though you are in an Arabian fairy tale from One Thousand and One Nights when gazing at the white domes with golden accents or the chandeliers adorned with Swarovski crystals. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan gave precise specifications during the construction of the mosque and expressly wished for the building to reflect the paradisiacal verses of the Quran.
Desert Safari Tour
What would a visit to the coastal island be without venturing into the depths of the Arabian desert? Exactly. Fortunately, there are numerous opportunities to take a safari tour through the desert. Feel the adrenaline coursing through your body as the 4WD vehicles drive up and down the sand dunes, and discover the unique views that transform into a myriad of colours with the sunset. For the more adventurous, you can try your hand at sandboarding, or simply enjoy the view with a traditional shisha pipe. At the end of the tour, traditional belly dancers often perform at one of the desert camps and an extensive grill buffet is set up. Those who wish can also have a beautiful henna tattoo applied. Do not forget sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat!
Ferrari World Abu Dhabi
In this theme park, located on Yas Island, everything revolves around driving. Here, the whole family can enjoy roller coasters and go-karting with state-of-the-art equipment. You can also admire the famous Formula 1 cars and experience being on an F1 circuit that you may have previously only seen on television. A day ticket is recommended. To round off the visit, you can enjoy authentic Italian cuisine and pick up a souvenir or two for friends and family in the shop.
Louvre Abu Dhabi
For all art lovers and culture enthusiasts, a visit to the Louvre Abu Dhabi is an absolute must-do. It is not only the largest art museum in the Arab world but also stands out with its architectural magnificence. Whether art from antiquity or the modern era, African art or Picasso — there is certainly something for every art lover to admire. The museum building is located on Saadiyat Island and tickets can be booked in advance on their website for approximately 15 euros.
